Landing light penalty

Post by dsherman » January 5th, 2019, 7:39 pm

What exactly is supposed to happen to turn the landing lights off? Flying the FSX default 737-800, I turned off and retracted the landing lights and taxi lights on the overhead panel once I got above 10,000, but VAFS kept detecting they were on, so I was penalized 4 times. Is there something additional that has to be turned off?

Hello D. Sherman,

Thanks for fixing your profile information. I don't think that there is extra to do, in regards to the landing lights. I do know that it is finicky, as I have it turned off for my VA. Let me ask Mike if he knows of any bugs with it. I do know that X-Plane users have reported it bugged, but for FSX, I don't recall off hand.
Regards,

Thanks for looking into that. Our CEO says he turns it off just before crossing 10,000, I’ll try that. If the message pops up anyway, do you suppose cycling them on and off will fix it? I’m an engineer in real life, that usually fixes things :D .

Unfortunately, cycling them might get you an extra penalty ... Let's see what Mike says, first ...

Hi D Sherman,

The system will keep penalizing you if you do not turn the lights off above 10K FT. I know this because I have done it to myself. As long as you turn them off before hitting 10K you should be fine.

Let us know how it goes.

Hey, did you ever broadcast on the radio in the Chicago area?

Mike

Thank you Mike, I’ll try to make sure I turn them off just before I get over 10,000. Not a radio broadcaster, although I am a ham radio operator.

Ugh! I got the message again despite turning the light off just before 10,000, but I think I figured it out. I started a new flight at night, turned all the lights off, and noticed that the landing light switch on the overhead panel is actually BACKWARDS. Sure enough, if I turn the switch off, the tarmac gets brighter. Turn the switch on, the tarmac gets dark. Thanks Microsoft... :?
